CNA Skills Test: Step-by-Step Guide to Passing
The CNA skills evaluation makes a lot of candidates nervous — but it’s predictable. You perform a handful of basic nursing skills for an evaluator, and you pass by following each step in order.
What skills are tested?
Common skills include handwashing, measuring vital signs, positioning, transfers, range of motion, measuring intake and output, and applying safety devices. You’ll typically perform several randomly selected skills plus handwashing.
Vital signs CNAs measure
Temperature, pulse, respirations, and blood pressure — and often oxygen saturation and a pain rating. Know normal ranges and how to report abnormal findings.
How to pass the skills test
- Start every skill with handwashing and identifying the resident.
- Explain what you’re doing and protect privacy.
- Follow the ordered steps exactly — evaluators score indirect-care steps too.
- End by making the resident safe and comfortable and washing hands.
