NCLEX-PN FAQ
Is the NCLEX-PN harder than the NCLEX-RN?
The NCLEX-PN covers similar clinical content but at the scope of practice of a licensed practical/vocational nurse — more focused on data collection and providing care under supervision, and less on independent assessment and care-plan management. Most students find the reasoning style identical; the difference is scope, not raw difficulty.
How many questions are on the NCLEX-PN?
The NCLEX-PN is a computer-adaptive test (CAT) of 85 to 150 questions, with up to 5 hours to finish. The exam stops as soon as it is 95% confident your ability is above (or below) the passing standard, so two students can pass with very different question counts.
What is the passing score for the NCLEX-PN?
There is no percentage score. You pass by demonstrating, with 95% confidence, that your ability is above the NCSBN passing standard using the computer-adaptive model. You either pass or you do not — there is no letter grade or percent.
Does the Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) apply to the PN exam?
Yes. Since 2023 the NCLEX-PN includes Next Generation NCLEX item types — case studies, Select All That Apply, bow-tie, matrix/grid, and other clinical-judgment formats. Practice them on our free NGN item-types pages.
How is the NCLEX-PN test plan organized?
The PN test plan has eight client-need categories. The biggest is Coordinated Care (18-24%), followed by Pharmacological Therapies and Safety & Infection Control. Our practice questions are drawn across all eight categories so you build balanced coverage.
Can I use these free practice questions for the LPN or LVN exam?
Yes. LPN (licensed practical nurse) and LVN (licensed vocational nurse) candidates both take the NCLEX-PN — the LVN title is simply what California and Texas use. The same practice applies to both.
